The exhibition Work for an Intern, presented at OPEN, an artist-run gallery in Reykjavík, brought together works by three artists and one intern. The exhibition explored the role of the cultural trainee within the context of an artist-run space. The intern temporarily assumed responsibility for the gallery through everyday tasks such as cleaning, welcoming visitors, and occupying a desk specially designed by one of the participating artists. Yet within this setting, the trainee ultimately embodied the expectations associated with her most feared stereotype.

During the long intervals between visitors, the intern's “real” role was carefully defined and performed. What this role actually entailed, however, remained so elusive it can only be explained through a persistent act of boredom.
